As a Telkom customer, you can actually set up your MMS and this can be done using a code. In this section of the article, I am going to show you how you can do this without any stress. To do this, kindly do the following; 

  • Pick up your phone and open your messaging app 
  • Once you open your messaging app, enter the message ‘setup + the make and model of your phone’ in the message body field. 
  • You will be required to send the message to the code, 185. 

Be assured that once the message is sent, your MMS settings will be configured, and immediately you can start sending MMS.

What is MMS? 

MMS is an abbreviation for Multimedia Messaging Service. This is a standard method of sending messages with multimedia content to and from a mobile phone via a cellular network. 

The MMS standard expands on the core SMS capability by allowing the exchange of text messages longer than 160 characters. MMS, as opposed to text-only SMS, can send up to forty seconds of video, one image, a slideshow of multiple images, or audio. 

MMS messages are delivered differently than SMS messages. The sending device must first encode the multimedia content in a manner similar to sending a MIME message. 

The message is then routed to the Multimedia Messaging Service Centre, which is the carrier’s MMS store and forward server. 

If the receiver is on a different carrier than the sender, the MMSC acts as a relay, forwarding the message to the MMSC of the recipient’s carrier via the Internet. 

The standards do not specify how to determine whether a handset is MMS capable. 

The operator typically maintains a database in which each mobile phone number is marked as being associated with a legacy handset or not. 

However, this method is unreliable because customers can change their handsets independently, and many of these databases are not dynamically updated. 

In simple terms, before the introduction of messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, and the rest, MMS was the only means through which media was sent from one mobile phone user to the other.
